Catsby le Magnifique
Some gals dream of The One. I’ve always been stuck on the idea of a Muppet-faced sidekick named Catsby.
As my mother can attest, my deep admiration for felines began at a young age. Most of my second grade art projects involved cats. Draw a family? A cat family! Draw an ice cream cone? A cat-faced scoop and a cone with a tail! Some of my first self-published books—high quality printer paper stapled together to reveal pages of hand-drawn illustrations and messy printing—detailed the adventures of flying cats. They had pastel fur, bien sur. The first furry love of my life was a young tabby named Buffy. We met at Petco. He looked up at me with his big amber eyes, and when I picked him up to get a closer look, he reached up to touch my cheek with his paw. It was love.
Now, years after his passing, I’ve finally found room in my heart for another fluffy companion. Against my better judgement—that year by year carte de séjour life sucks—I decided it was time to adopt. The process was akin to adopting a human child. Finally, after months of dead-ends, I found someone who wasn’t peeved over my nationality, et voilà! This delightful Muppet-faced fluff became my most aesthetic roommate to date.
While the concept of having a cat in a studio apartment might terrify some, I’m reporting live from the trenches. I’m genuinely astonished by how little trouble she actually is—famous last words, non? While she has days of being a little rascal—overturning the potted plants, unplugging the record player, and hopping into the shower with me, only to tramp around the house with gooey conditioner paws—most of the time she’s a purring little dear.
Party at Catsby’s? You’d have to be okay with champagne cocktails in the bathroom, because that’s the hottest spot in town. Catsby’s claimed the bathroom sink as her clubhouse. From her porcelain throne, she has a perfect vantage point for watching the pigeons roosting outside on the windowsill. While she’s still a novice birdwatcher, she’s certainly putting the time in to improve.
Catsby’s livre préféré? The Great Gatsby! Duh.
